HK quarantine ‘pointless’

According to The Straits Times:

HONG KONG – HONG Kong’s seven-day quarantine of 300 guests and staff in a city centre hotel over swine flu fears has sparked frustration among those detained as one expert called the move ‘pointless’.

While emergency measures have been taken across the world where the A(H1N1) virus has been confirmed, only Hong Kong has isolated an entire hotel.

Inside the four-star hotel, in the bustling bar district of Wanchai, frustration was beginning to simmer.

‘We have had one Korean who was screaming and shouting and an English couple who were very upset,’ Indian buying agent Kevin Ireland told AFP by phone.

On Saturday, a masked female guest broke down and had to be comforted by a health worker, an AFP reporter witnessed.

Lo Wing-lok, a Hong Kong doctor and infectious diseases expert, said the government had over-reacted.

‘It is pointless. Flu is a droplet disease and so you have to be within six feet or two metres of the person. Beyond that the risk is not high,’ said Mr Lo.

- Mr Lo. should understand the 7 days quarantine is for their own safety and they all should learn the facts on how this flu will spread, H1N1 virus not just spread via distance proximity with a infected person but also through touching any public objects laced by a infected person and touching their own facial entrance such as nose, eyes or mouth.

That will means the whole hotel may be compromised and they all should avoid touching anything such as lift buttons, railings or taps and keep washing their hands whenever there is a need.

The flu virus now is out in the public with 50 guests that exited the hotel may or may not be infected are probably in the public now spreading to more places in a lightning pace while the people inside the hotel are safe with all the possible medical attention possible…so they shouldn’t complain too much.
