Singapore Court Orders Internet Company to Reveal Customers Who Illegally Download Videos

SINGAPORE (AP) — A Singapore video distributor said Tuesday it has won a suit against an Internet service provider asking for the identities of customers alleged to have downloaded popular Japanese animated cartoons.

Anime distributor Odex Pt. Ltd. said StarHub, a telecommunications, Internet and cable company, was ordered to reveal about 1,000 of its subscribers accused of downloading anime illegally.

StarHub had earlier resisted Odex’s efforts to obtain the data, citing “an obligation to protect our customers’ information.”

In the instance of Odex, they have satisfied the court of their need for the information. As such, we will comply with the court order,” said StarHub spokesman Michael Sim.

Once Odex obtains the identities of the Internet users alleged to have downloaded the anime videos, the company will likely contact them and seek compensation of up to 5,000 Singapore dollars ($3,285) from each, Odex Director Stephen Sing said. The users will also have to destroy any stolen content and stop further illegal downloading.

The article clearly have a sounded a super alert to the all the Japanese animated cartoons fans. Do take note that you will be tracked easily using IP Address (those numbers that identify you right down to within 10 meters using cookies and Google map) and if the “company” mentioned in the article really reveal the customer information to Anime distributor Odex Pt. Ltd. then soon more distributors will come out to sue and sue…

Hey, let’s start a company to distribute videos! So we can sue people in the internet! What the hell is the court doing? What happen when the list of users got misplaced or misused? What will happen to the internet? No more privacy anymore since any company can think of ways to sue people, the boycott will ensure them no more business forever as more people will start to buy from overseas via online auction or shopping.

Ok, I am not a fan of cartoons luckily but I do know some who does…it’s going to be a shock for them to find this out. Oh, the ISP who first to release customer information for lawsuit will be collapsing very very very soon as many will start switching service provider like flies! Even those who don’t downloads but just got expired.

I can imagine this telephone interview soon appearing all over the news

“What kind of privacy can we get since the ISP can anyhow reveal our information to anyone! Do they sell our emails as well to SPAMMER? Is this legal at all? You mean they get to give all our details to third party just because of a court order? What happen if they give out wrong person information to this company and got sued wrongly because of human error? It’s better to be safe then sorry…click toooooooo”

Well, I think soon enough there will be more companies to follow suit to sue CONSUMER who uses their product illegally but this will make them no longer a CONSUMER anymore…at least for the products they are being sued for…they will have the phobia to even WATCH CARTOON anyway and maybe switch their hobby elsewhere…like gambling.

The distributors should start to think of alternative business ventures…the internet streaming websites are springing up daily…to emulate the success of youtube. The P2p TV are having live channels streaming to millions of users. There is a website that helps Singaporean to record their local TV Channels and playback for them to see…even featured in digital life some more.

Downloading will soon be a thing of the past, Google Video and Youtube started this race and soon all over the world will be having court case fighting over copyright infringement many more get slapped with heavy fines.

The collapse of the Internet Business will follow as the result, nobody dare to do anything creative or interesting anymore…as it will deem illegal or possible to be illegal.

Who governs the internet anyway? ISP? Court? If that is the case that the court can rule customer information to be released and for lawsuit then what happens if more companies start to follow the same trend and starts to sue the same batch of people?

There will be a chaotic moment when a 5 year old get fined and send to boys home…because of cartoon watching at home…hmmm

15 years down the road he applied for a job and the interviewer will ask….

“Do you have any criminal records?”

“Yes”

“What did you do?”

“When I was 5 years old, someone emailed me a link to download cartoons…and I thought it’s free so I downloaded…like millions of files and forget to remove them from sharing to others!”

“OMG…errr wait for our call ok? Thank you! Next!”

Well, the above examples are those stupid people who download and share thousands of files at one time…are deserved to be punished! They hoard the network and seriously waste the ISP resource.

Starhub cable broadband is sharing bandwidth per building basis so if the whole building are using internet then the bandwidth will slow down to a crawl. (Luckily I am on another ISP!)

So after SCV (Starhub Cable TV) services raised their sports channels fees, now comes another big storm approaching steadily wiping out the customer’s confidence and may have to face the reality of competition with other Internet service provider that gives free wireless connection and possibly better privacy and safety of customer information.

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his directors or his children, he decided to do something different.

He called all the young executives in his company together.

“It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO,” he said. “I have decided to choose one of you.”

The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. “I am going to give each one of you a seed today – a very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO.”

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed.

He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he
    planted the seed.

Every day, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After
about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now,
others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn’t have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by – still nothing in Jim’s pot. He just knew he had
killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had
nothing. Jim didn’t say anything to his colleagues, however. He just
kept watering and fertilizing the soil – he so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company
brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that
he wasn’t going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest
    about what happened.

Jim felt sick at his stomach. It was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.

He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful–in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed. A few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back.

“My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown,” said the
    CEO.

“Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!”

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the financial director to bring him to the front.

Jim was terrified. He thought, “The CEO knows I’m a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!”

    When Jim
got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed.

    Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, “Here is your next Chief Executive! His name is Jim!”

Jim couldn’t believe it. Jim couldn’t even grow his seed. How could he be the new CEO the others said?

Then the CEO said, “One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed.

I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me
today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead – it was not
    possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers.

“When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief
    Executive!”

    Moral:

If you plant honesty, you will reap trust

If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.

If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.

If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment

If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective.

If you plant hard work, you will reap success.

If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap
    later.
