GE to invest in water research..Good or Bad?

According to AsiaOneNews:

US Conglomerate General Electric (GE) and a Singapore university said on Thursday they will invest US$100 million (S$151 million) in a research facility aimed at helping solve the world’s water problems.

GE Water, a unit of GE Energy, signed an agreement with National University of Singapore to establish the Singapore Water Technology Centre at the school’s campus, a GE statement said.

The facility will ‘house GE scientists and engineers who will develop new solutions for low-energy sea water desalination, water reclamation and more efficient water use,’ it said.

It is expected to be fully operational by mid-2009.

- This to me should be good news for the world however something tells me otherwise.

Let’s analyze the article in point form

  1. GE the “Conglomerate” to invest “US$100 million” into low energy sea water desalination plant.

  2. expected to be fully operational by mid-2009.

The General Electric had been one of the biggest holders of patents ever in inventions worldwide and they continue to acquire more later…so does many big oil companies that had patents worldwide on renewable energies or core innovation such as battery technology to enable real headway to “freedom from fossil fuels”.

When it’s fully operational, GE will be expecting to profit from this “innovative” investment and you and I probably will be drinking this “distilled sea water” in our very own back yard but obviously had to PAY a lot more.

I myself is doing my little project to distill drain water into fresh water supply using just the sun but it may take lot’s of testing before there be any success.

Fresh water supply is crucial for places that have been suffering from drought or water contamination by industrial waste such as China, Australia and many cities is going through the desertification process due to severe climate changes.

I do hope that GE is doing this for the greater good instead of for profit as it will not really benefit the third world countries if they can’t even afford the technology.

Time will tell if this investment goes into real time implementation but I won’t want to wait that long as in the future….any little project helps.
