Student paying adult bus fare

According to AsiaOne News:

“On Dec 9, I boarded bus service 502 from Thong Teck Building along Orchard Road at about 1.20pm. Upon boarding, I found that my student’s ez-link card had insufficient value, and was prepared to pay in cash.

The driver asked for my destination, then told me to pay $2.30 in cash. I complied, though somewhat nonplussed. I later alighted at Parc Oasis station at about 1.55pm.?”

- The writer seems to later checked from SBS Transit website that students only pay 45cents in ez-link fare or 55 cents in cash for students taking any bus service on SBS.

Concessionary travel with Student Identification Pass

Students 1.2m and above in height must present their valid student identification passes to enjoy concessionary travel.

All Basic Services EZ-Link Cash
Flat fare Aircon Non-aircon Aircon Non-aircon
$0.45 $0.40 $0.55 $0.45
^Transfer Rebates $0.10 -

Tertiary students have to pay the full adult fare if their concession cards are not affixed with valid stamps.

S$1 flat rate will be charged for the following Services:

  • CityShopper
  • Chinatown Direct
  • Stadium Direct

Concessionary travel is not applicable for the following Services:

  • Fast Forward
  • Premium
  • Express
  • Nite Owl

As shown in the website it seems that the Student Concessionary travel is NOT applicable for Premium buses…woot!

Now the question is why is that so? Does Premium bus have the GOLDEN rule that students don’t get to have cheaper fares? Is it ADULT only?

I don’t get it, what is the use of a STUDENT Concessionary Ezlink Card at all?

Problem:

  1. Students who don’t have a job pay Higher fares for services stated below
    • Fast Forward
    • Premium
    • Express
    • Nite Owl

Solution:

  1. Why not let students pay a lower flat rate for these services?
  2. Why not let students pay a slightly cheaper fees for these services?
  3. Why not ban students from using these “Premium” buses if it’s for adults only?

The Premium bus is only for seating only and unlike those “ordinary” buses that people have to stand when it’s very crowded.

But regardless the reason behind a “Premium” or not types of buses, the student are NOT working and should be given a slightly cheaper fares in ALL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Regardless of TYPES unless it’s NOT FOR STUDENTS….

Wacky solutions for SBS

  1. Adult Premium Buses that have “Adult” Entertainment played on the TV mobile!
  2. Premium Taxi service….oh WAIT…it’s that already done?
  3. Super Premium Service with wider seats and personal television consoles similar to tour buses hahahaha

Why don’t the public transport operators spare a thought for these kids that may be living in poverty right now and have no means to EARN a living for themselves….YOU (transport operators) may be harming your own next generation………if you have any.

Government should subsidies for any short fall in “profits” for the transport operators on behalf of these students in a way to promote more local Singaporeans to “make more kids”.

If government keep giving subsidies, how can it afford to pay the bus drivers, and to maintain the buses?
