Time to start mask-wearing campaign

According to Straits Times:

WITH reference to Influenza A (H1N1), perhaps it is time to start a mask-wearing campaign, especially if you have a cough, runny nose or other respiratory signs or symptoms, in order to prevent the spread of infection.

Prevention is better than cure. As there is no obvious early sign or symptom of H1N1, it is best to avoid any droplets. It is an unusual sight when one puts on a mask, but it may save at least one individual from infection. If everyone wears masks, it may prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus.

There are many who commented in “The Straits Times” about this article is really rude and the article points towards a kind reminder to all Singaporeans that this is our homeland and we should do what it takes to protect the country regardless if it is slighly “shameful” to put on a mask when you are sick.

Obviously the key problems are below

  1. Lack of masks
  2. Lack of government will to stockpile masks
  3. Lack of publicity of people wearing mask – news anchors & ministers
  4. Lack of the warning level – now downgraded to yellow
  5. Lack of severity of the threat by Swine Flu although it’s infectious.
  6. Singapore more afraid of being shameful than total annihilation of the population by the epidemic.

If the flu is not that dangerous compared to normal seasonal flu which kills hundreds of thousands of people each year, Singapore may not be worried but however if this is just the beginning of a bigger wave of more potent viruses…we shall need more than just masks to protect the people of Singapore, it’s the blind faith of love for your love ones, your family and friends.

Be a good citizen, and love your family & country by protecting them by wearing a mask or hankerchief to cover your mouth when you are sick…please.
