Underground MRT Station’s Doors Remains Opened Without Train!

According to Stomp Singapore Seen:

Much to the horror of a commuter, who was at the Tiong Bahru MRT station, the platform doors were open, but the train was nary in sight.

And later, the train did pull up at the platform, but whilst it was doing so, the doors remained open!

Said HB, who recounted the incident which took place on Feb 25 at about 9:30 PM

- This article simply shown one of many technical problems that our efficient public transport are facing probably every day that may increase over time due to wear and tear.

According to Wikipedia

These doors prevent suicides, enable climate control in stations and prevent unauthorised access to restricted areas.

- The doors had been in operation way back many years and suffered many wear and tear, the repairs should be quite disruptive to the daily commute.

My personal view is that they should have some kind of temporary barriers ready just in case of any children accidentally fall into the gaping opened doors.

If given enough time, a simple yellow warning tapes should be pulled from one end to another end (1 meter above ground and away from doors) to warn anyone from crossing the lines when the train had not arrived yet.

Here’s the wacky solutions that I can think up below hehe

  1. Have a MRT personnel to guard every opened door (High Risk, High Cost)
  2. Cease whole MRT train and fix the darn doors (Long Delays, High Fines, High Cost)
  3. Ignore the technical glitch, carry on as per normal and repair it later (High Complains, Calculated Risk, Low Cost, No Delays, Big Gamble)
  4. Temporary yellow tape across 1 meter away by 1 meter high to warn anyone to stay away from the opened doors. (Unprofessional, unsightly, safe, low cost, no delays)

Well, with the lowering of fares…we might be seeing a lot more of such technical glitches in the near future…

Below is my suggestion to fellow commuters :)

  1. Don’t stand near a opened doors near the tracks in underground MRT stations
  2. Don’t rush into MRT train.
  3. Don’t run to catch a train.
  4. Watch where you are going in the MRT Station, I won’t be surprise to see someone playing a PlayStation Portable (PSP) and walk right into the track one day. (That including me)
  5. Always stay away from the yellow lines and stand sideways near the track just in case someone bump you into the tracks.
  6. If you are intoxicated (very drunk or very drugged), please kindly take a taxi home and if you must take a MRT…get someone to accompany you home.
  7. If you are suicidal due to financial problems, call 1800-222-0000 for government sponsored financial assistance.
  8. Stay alert!!

That’s all for today :)

Very creative suggestions Simon. How do you prevent those people who doesn’t want to give up seats to elderly or children ?
  • Simon Tay
Wooo…that is something very hard to enforce to locals or FT.

    Wack Solutions
    1. Elderly to fall down…deliberately in front a seated young lad

    2. Give seat to elderly contest with mystery elderly to visit the MRT train daily to find people who gave seats to the mystery elderly for a $10,000 NTUC vouchers!

    3. Sit on the floor…in front of the seated young lad.

    4. Complain loudly to a friend say leg tired.

    5. Elderly to wear a T- shirt with “Kindly give seats to elderly”

    6. MRT officers to help elderly get a seat by asking the young lad politely to give up the seat.
