According to AsiaOne news:

IT’S common to hear Singaporeans gripe about having to be packed like sardines on trains and buses during peak hours.

But take a look at these pictures – see how foreign workers are being transported daily.

They put up with bumpy rides and battle the elements. Worse, it is dangerous.

This comes very close to heart as my father recently got “no more projects” in a construction work and he used to drive workers to work using a small van which is slightly less dangerous than lorry.

The problem with the lorry worker stunts is there are no regulation or enforcement in place to tackle this dangerous stunts from happening and by enforcing penalties on construction companies may be worst off as they might be struggling under heavy financial difficulties and cannot endure a blow such as a heavy fine and might close down causing more serious social problems.

I do pity those workers who need to fight for their lives on the road and every day is a blessing for them, this will be just one of many dangers that they will have to endure throughout their working experience in Singapore.

Suggestions to Construction Companies

  1. Install some safety measures such as safety belts or handles for the workers to hang on to
  2. Install a way to communicate with driver, 2 way intercom to signal for move or stop while alighting.
  3. Separate workers & equipments from each trip so that there won’t be dangerous items hurting workers when in accident.
  4. Rent a minibus services with local bus rental companies
  5. Buy some coffins & insurance for your workers if all else fails…!! >_<

The worst can be that the companies are driving dangerously to avoid police if the authorities clamp down on such activities however, the traffic police can issue summon or warnings via high quality photographs taken by high speed camera.

Suggestion to traffic police

  1. Find a way to use thermal heat detection to trigger the high speed camera, if there are more than 5 bodies in a vehicle…take photograph.
  2. Get a public email account to allow the public to email photos of suspected offenders and trace to their location & do spot check (unlikely)
  3. Police car to patrol the streets and if found any violators to give verbal warning, take down license numbers & give 1st warning.
  4. 2nd warning is fine & 3rd is chargeable offense (not sure if they will implement it or not)
  5. Set a proper guideline on how to transport workers safely and legally.
