According to AsiaOneNews:

BUS fares will go up by one to two cents from Oct 1, the Public Transport Council announced on Tuesday.

But there will be no increase in train fares.

Senior citizen concessionary EZ-Link bus fares, which are flat fares pegged to the lowest adult EZ-Link fare band will also increase by 2 cents, up from the current 65 cents.

However, because they are flat fares, the same 67 cents fare will apply regardless of the distance travelled.

‘The PTC has to strike a balance between safeguarding commuters’ interests and ensuring the financial viability of the public transport operators so that they can continue to improve their services over time and sustain their capital investments,’ Chairman of the PTC Gerard Ee said.

The majority of commuters will see no increase or a small increase in fares, said PTC. Taking into account both bus and rail trips, five in 10 trips will see no increase; one in 10 trips will see an increase of 1 cent and the remaining four in 10 trips will see an increase of 2 cents.

The Council said in August that transport operators SBS Transit and SMRT Corp had applied for fare increases – an annual revision exercise governed by a set formula.

This year, the formula caps fare rises at 1.8 per cent – or around three cents per ride.

The last fare increase was in October last year, when costs went up by one to three cents per ride.

Back then, the operators blamed high costs – in particular the high price of fuel and manpower – for the need to raise their fares. They are citing the same reasons this time.

SBS Transit, part of the ComfortDelGro group, for instance, said their costs have gone up significantly.

“Energy costs, for example, rose by 20 per cent or $20.3 million last year – having already increased by 41.2 per cent in 2005,” SBS Transit spokesman Tammy Tan said.

“Manpower costs, the company’s largest cost component, also increased by about $12.1 million during the year.”

SBS also pointed out that it had invested heavily in buses as well as commuter services.

It spent $135 million on new buses in the past two years. And it has rolled out an online bus arrival system, which helps commuters to plan their journeys better.

Schemes to help the poor

Both operators said they would come up with schemes to help the poor cope with any fare rise.

‘We have tried to keep fare increase small for as many commuters as possible but we know that any fare increase, no matter how small, would still be felt by commuters, especially tho se from needy families,

‘Those who need additional help will receive help from the Government’s Public Transport Fund. The public transport four operators will also chip in towards public transport vouchers to help low-income families cope with the fare increase,’ Mr Ee said.

The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) is not entirely convinced that a fare hike is in order.

Case executive director Seah Seng Choon has pointed out that transport companies are enjoying “good returns.” For instance, SMRT achieved a 39 per cent rise in net earnings to $37.94 million in the first quarter.

“‘With such significant increase in net earnings, commuters would certainly expect it to show clear justifications for any need to hike fares at this point in time,’ he said.

    Dear Save the earth,

    kendrick,

I am guessing your parents and grand parents are well off...or have high post jobs. :)

My dad is a poor construction worker that is on contract basis that have on and off projects. His CPF is virtually zero because of housing and have plenty of credit debts.

Rehiring them is one issue but if they can really work at that age is another.

Old people have health problems high blood and sugar, mental ability to remember things are starting to fade. Productivity will be much lower then the younger generation. The ability to hire and remain competitive to market will means they will be paid much lower so that the boss can hire more old people.

This are basically slaving the old folks to death. Imagine the inflation of the current rates (M3 money inflation is about 23% year on year) and oil prices spike to USD $81 per barrel.

The future of below S$1500 jobs are considered super low income jobs and they will suffer tremendously.

They will have a much lower standard of living and seriously worst off.

When they start to do scams and MLM that requires them to believe and part with their money monthly and get no much return are even worst.

Then when they apply for low income assistance from government have to stay in smaller flats and no children that is rich. Have to prove that his income is much lower then the predetermined sum....

MOST of the uneducated ones don't even bother to apply for any assistance from Government and STARVE.

Some just complain and join some religious groups and those religious groups sometimes will provide daily food packing delivered to their door steps.

If a terrorist group of gangster group...what means to reach out and recruit people? A fanatical religious group of course!! A charitable ones at least ....

The "Terrorist Group" Hamas of Palestine provide aids to the bomb victims (Attacked by Israel) in the gaza and won them some seats in the Government!!!

This is the harshest times of the future...it's not simple as giving incentives to the poor...but also to prepare them for the worst.

there will be angry people...regardless...what the Government does...the civil unrest will come when the CPF that pegs against market prices starts to fall downwards due to the "potential" USA Recession to come...it's almost certainty to be doomed to have lower CPF in the future...

Just flip the Straits Times today and 80% to 90% is below the age of 85 appeared in the obituary!!

    I rest my case!

I am not too worried about the elderly because I read that the government is encouraging people to rehire older workers.
  • save the earth
Good to hear that you don't blame your parents. Whether they are good or bad, still they are your parents. As for me, both my parents passed away when I was 7. I can't feel the warmth of my family. I am just here to put my comments on your blog so let's keep it this way and stop whinning about your life.

Those earning below 1.5K per month are consider needy citizen. I just read it in the news today? And I think the raise in bus fare will affec senior citizen as well. What is the age that can be consider senior citizen ?
  • wei ling
I can't believe this bus fare issue can lead to all these 'friendly' discussions.

I don't blame them for anything...

To be honest I don't blame them for being divorced and own separate houses and didn't really spend time with me when I am young and too busy working.

I am lucky that I don't go astray and become a bad person. I am the first generation latch key student in Primary School and always take care of myself when I go home. Climbing up the grills to unlock the doors are like normal then...

Their debts haven't so far been passed down but as in the future we don't know how they are going to retire at all and my pay combined with my brother and sister's pay cannot afford to help them pay back their loans.

My mum will be screaming for money from me and my dad's house expenses is my responsibility now.

I believe they can never ever retire as they both don't even have CPF.

They are not a burden but we won't know the future will be much much more expensive to support the older generation with crazy spending habits.

My father is getting better nowadays and not spend too much. We should not be complacent and overspent on stuff that does not earn money.

I am not arguing with you but do note that It's just a blog to rant out frustration.

Personally, I don't hold credit cards, no debts except for the HDB Loan and daily expenses.

I don't blame anyone for what's coming...but I am here to blog about the current affairs and what's coming.

Save the earth, do identify yourself and hope this debate ends here.
  • save the earth
Please enlighten me on how your parents debts can be passed down to you? Don't blame your parents, they are the ones who raise you up.
  • Simon Tay
Come educate me! Any amount of money assistance is very very very important to me.

Where do you get those vouchers? Both my parents are in huge credit debts...and what can we do?

They ignore it and say that one day it will not be their problem.

So what can I do...when they pass the debts to next generation?

Tell me!? Ok...Let's encourage the poor! Jia you! :)

"Hey, don't worry...the government giving you vouchers to eat and shopping! yeah! good life ahead!"

    The poor will say

"Yah...they put me on TV and make me smile...then when I ask for more vouchers they say...please send in the application form with your NRIC..etc etc supporting documents to prove you are needy!"

"When they found out my children are rich and living in big houses but abandoned me...they say I rich also...how?"
  • save the earth
Whether you like it or not, prices will always go up regardless of the situation. Over the years, do you see prices going down ? I am sure our government will educate the needy people on how and where to get assistance. The money given to them may means little to us but it means a lot to them. Why not encourage the poor and need in your blog rather than saying they will suffer ?
  • Simon Tay
    Hi Save the earth,

Do look deeper into the news on how SMRT spent how much to help the needy...

How do they know they are needy and how to they differentiate among the needy and wealthy? How to the needy get their assistance?

I did not read it up yet but let me know as there are many "needy" friends out there who have big houses but lots of debts.

Yes I agree on the oil prices rising to record levels as discuss in my peak oil blog sgenergycrisis.blogspot.com which I can predict this is hike in transport fees is going to be more frequent in the near future...like 2 times a year to 3 to 4 to 5 to 10 times a year...all hike small amount like 1,2 cents...

then total inflation might end up like few dollars per ride per person...then the poor will suffer regardless of the "million" dollar assistance package.

Most don't even know how to get that assistance!
  • Save the Earth
I fully agree with the rise because of the increase in GST and it will pull down SMRT earnings. SMRT is also a profit making organisation so it makes sense to increase the fare. Furthermore, the increase in oil price will escalate the fare in the further.

If you read the news, there is a 3 million dollars package to help the needy so is not too bad. Child fare and elderly fare will not be raise too.
